OMEGA is perfectly suited to perform global simulations. Rectilinear grids
have an inherent problem to represent the poles, which pose computational
singularities. Typically, a collar around the poles is omitted for global
calculations, or, if polar solutions are desired, the grid is rotated so
that the singularities appear elsewhere. OMEGA has the unique advantage
that the grid is immune from such problems.
The global grid is generated starting from an icosahedron, and dividing each
triangular faces into four equilateral triangles. This process is repeated
several times. Then the underlying terrain and land/water information is
processed and the regular adaptation cycle takes over.
